A recent theme of my thinking is tha enemies are important for good fiction: on Apple TV Foundation has the terrifying Tellum Bond and we’ll be disappointed if the Mule isn’t much more terrifying. Time Bandits TV series falls flat on the other hand because Pure Evil doesn’t seem that much worse than the Supreme Being.
Real life doesn’t consistently have that kind of enemy though and there”a a big difference between “a story that is compelling” and a “story that is true”. I thought Drexler was compelling in

But then his research program made zero progress in the next 25 years.
